CAR T: HOPE FOR CANCER PATIENTS WORLDWIDE

CAR T-cell therapy has become one of the most important breakthroughs in modern cancer treatment. However, access to this therapy can be complicated. In many countries, CAR-T treatment is available only through national healthcare systems or insurance programs.
In other countries, the therapy may not yet be available at all, or only for specific conditions, and patients may need to seek treatment abroad.

Below is an overview of regions where this treatment may be available to international patients.
For self-paying international patients, CAR-T therapy is most realistically accessible in a limited number of countries, usually through specialized centers experienced in treating international patients.

Main Destination Countries (Self-Pay Friendly)

United States – Offers the broadest range of FDA-approved CAR-T products and indications, but is also the most expensive. The cost of the CAR-T drug alone typically ranges from $370,000 to $475,000, with total treatment costs often significantly higher. Many centers require full payment in advance when treating international self-paying patients.

Germany – Several certified CAR-T centers (for example, university hospitals such as Heidelberg) can accept international patients if they meet EMA indications and prepay or secure insurance guarantees. Typical treatment packages range from €300,000 to €400,000.

Spain – Spain has active public and some private CAR-T programs. List prices can range from €250,000 to €370,000. Some public hospitals produce CAR-T therapies in-house, which may reduce internal costs. However, access for non-EU, self-paying patients may be more limited.

Israel – Israel has a developed medical tourism sector with experience coordinating CAR-T treatment for international patients. Costs vary widely, roughly $100,000 to $550,000, depending on the hospital, the CAR-T product used, and whether the therapy is commercial or produced through academic programs.

China – China has a large number of CAR-T centers and the widest price range, approximately $55,000 to $450,000. Many treatment options are available for self-paying patients, including both commercial products and hospital-developed CAR-T therapies. Some programs actively market to international patients through brokers.

Turkey and India – Emerging medical hubs that combine lower treatment costs with infrastructure for international patients. Prices may start at around $55,000 in Turkey and are often lower than Western prices in India. Availability may be limited to certain cancers and is often concentrated in a small number of flagship private hospitals.

Factors Patients Should Consider

Because CAR-T therapy is a complex treatment, choosing a treatment center involves more than simply finding where the therapy is available. Patients should consider several important factors:

  • Experience of the hospital with CAR-T therapy
  • Type of cancer being treated
  • Regulatory approval status of the therapy
  • Support services for international patients
  • Cost transparency and treatment logistics

A thorough medical evaluation is typically required before a patient can be accepted for CAR-T treatment.
